A Vast and Wild Safari Destination

Formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is one of Africa’s largest and most untouched wilderness areas, covering over 30,000 square kilometers. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its diverse landscapes, including rivers, lakes, forests, and open savannahs, making it a prime location for an authentic off-the-beaten-path safari experience.

Big Game, Wild Dogs, and Boat Safaris

Nyerere is home to Tanzania’s largest populations of elephants, hippos, and crocodiles, as well as healthy numbers of lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and antelope species. It is also one of the last strongholds of the African wild dog, offering a rare chance to see these fascinating predators. Unlike traditional safaris, Nyerere offers unique boat safaris on the Rufiji River, where you can observe hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife up close, along with guided walking safaris for an immersive bush experience.

The Best Time to Visit

The dry season (June–October) is best for spotting wildlife around water sources and enjoying boat safaris. The green season (November–April) brings lush landscapes and excellent birdwatching, though some areas may be inaccessible due to heavy rains.
